Relationship to Society

The Europe Region WAGGGS helps Associations to promote a positive image of Girl Guiding/ Girl Scouting, ensuring that the programmes they undertake are valued by the society in which they function, and the individuals and organisations they need to influence.

Through its relationship with society, an Association can establish community development projects which provide girls and young women with the opportunities to develop leadership and team-building skills and contribute to the development of their own communities, their country and the world. Girl Scouts and Girl Guides also gain skills from participating in decision-making bodies at local, national and world level.

The Europe Region WAGGGS works with Associations to help them present a modern and relevant image of Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting, to collaborate and network with other organisations and to promote the benefits of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting to the society in which they operate.
This support can take the form of contacts by telephone or e-mail, tailored visits or workshops - a workshop for French-speaking Associations in the Region on Relationship to Society is planned for June 2003.

The Region is also continually developing its own ‘relationship to society’ so that the interests of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting are represented on an European level, and so that we can influence and contribute to issues affecting Member Organisations and young people living in Europe today. The Europe Region WAGGGS has consultative status with the Council of Europe, is actively involved in the work of its Youth and Sports Directorate, attends consultations with the European Commission and other institutions of the European Union and is also an active member of the European Youth Forum. Through these relationships, the Europe Region WAGGGS is able to play a role in the development of national youth policies, policies on non-formal education, or policies to combat racism and xenophobia amongst young people living in Europe today.
