Organisations, representing 65 national Girl Guide or Girl Scout
Associations with a total membership if 1.2 million young people,
belong to the Europe Region WAGGGS. Since 1990, 13 new Associations
from Central and Eastern Europe have joined the Europe Region
WAGGGS, 2 countries are working towards membership, and we are
developing contacts with two more.
The Europe Region WAGGGS now supports Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting
in 42 countries throughout Europe, supporting Member Organisations
to become full members and helping them to develop and grow.
The Region is committed to working with its Member Organisations
to ensure that they:
- continue
to fulfil the criteria for membership
- are representative of the different parts of the society in which
they are based, and the different levels of that society
- offer
their members quality Girl Guiding/Girl Scouting which will provide
opportunities for self-development, in keeping with WAGGGS
Mission and its goals.
Regular contact and support is given to Member Organisations and
those countries working towards membership through visits, telephone
calls and by e-mail. The Region also encourages the development
of partnerships to give specific assistance on particular issues
between well-established and newer Associations.
The Region also supports Associations to develop strategies to
ensure that they continue to meet the needs and aspirations of
their existing members and to find new ways of introducing Girl
Guiding and Girl Scouting to more young people throughout Europe.
In 2001, Associations met in Cyprus to consider the challenges
facing youth organisations with regard to membership and the positive
actions they could take to deal with this issue in their own Associations.
As a result of the work carried out during that meeting, a tool-kit
on Recruitment and Retention of Membership will shortly be produced
by the Europe Region WAGGGS.
