Non-formal education
is a form of organized educational activity that takes place outside
the formal educational system. WAGGGS is the largest organisation
in the world to offer non-formal educational programmes to girls
and young women.
The Europe Region WAGGGS helps each Member Organisation
to develop a progressive educational programme of self-development,
tailored to their members needs, with identifiable learning objectives,
so they can acquire life skills and develop attitudes based on a
set of values, which will enable them to become selfmotivated, responsible,
supportive and active citizens in their own communities.
By organising seminars, making visits and developing other contacts,
Europe Region WAGGGS helps Member Organisations to develop non-formal
educational programmes tailored to the needs and aspirations of
their members in today s society. Forthcoming events include a subregional
workshop on Educational Programme and Training taking place in 2003.
As well as looking at the needs of Member Organisations, the Europe
Region also participates in the debate on the role of non-formal
education at European level. Eurolearn in May 2001 brought together
international youth organisations, representatives of the Council
of Europe and members of European Guide and Scout organisations
to analyse the impact of WAGGGS educational
programme in the wider society.
The European Commission is currently working on the role of non-formal education in young people's
development as part of the implementation of the White Paper on youth Policy. Methods are also
being developed to recognize the achievements of young people through non-formal educational activities.
Europe Region WAGGGS continues to contribute to the debates and policy discussions on these issues.
